Hannah Caldwell is a Melbourne based food photographer whose work explores our notion of the human experience through elements of the natural world.
I am always searching for meaning in life and I’m drawn to subjects that represent human experience and its complexity. In my commercial practice food is a subject that I love to work with because it represents so much in the way of family, culture, tradition, nature – we need food to live so it has a significance to my artistic practice and exploration.
Food is connection and family. Growing up it was always about food. Family dinners, holidays and experiencing different cuisines. Memories of Mum’s nourishing home made chicken soup. Food is magical in its abilities to heal, transcend time, distance and cultural differences. It takes me back to my childhood and connects me to family. We can be separated by distance and yet a recipe passed down from my grandmother can transport me to a place when we were together.
I was surrounded by art as a child, my mother was an artist and taught me to draw and paint from a young age. I think I am drawn to photograph flowers because of her love of the garden and the floral arrangements she would paint displayed around the house.
Hannah’s portfolio features both editorial and commercial images, and each portfolio showcases a particular theme in food photography.
The Food Portfolio focuses on gorgeous food photography
The Beverage Portfolio includes strong editorial and product advertising images
Finally, the Still Life portfolio centers on inspired tablescapes
